Ingredients

6 whole allspice

6 whole black peppercorns

3 whole cloves

2 cinnamon sticks

2 Honeycrisp apples, halved, cored and chopped

3 cups apple cider

1 cup fresh cranberries

1 bottle (750 mL) red wine such as Pinot Noir or Syrah

1 green pear, halved lengthwise, cored and chopped

1 navel orange, quartered and thinly sliced crosswise

1 cup brandy

1/2 cup fresh orange juice

Preparation

1. In 6-inch square piece of cheesecloth, wrap allspice, peppercorns, cloves and cinnamon sticks; tie with kitchen string to secure.

 

2. In large saucepot, heat apples, cider, cranberries and wrapped spices to a boil over medium-high heat; reduce heat to low and simmer 30 minutes. Remove wrapped spices; cool slightly. Makes about 3 cups cider mixture.

 

3. In large pitcher, stir wine, pear, orange, brandy, orange juice and cider mixture; refrigerate at least 2 hours or until chilled. Makes about 10 cups.

 

4. Serve sangria over ice.
